Explain the history of Kho-Kho.

1. Origin: The exact origin of Kho-Kho is uncertain. Historians generally believe it developed from the traditional game “Run and Chase.” Its growth is closely associated with the akharas and vyayamshalas of Maharashtra, and it is believed to have originated in or near Pune.
2. Early development: The game gradually spread across India and became popular in neighbouring countries, including Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. It was also presented as a demonstration game at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
3. Rules and organisation: A committee of experienced players framed rules in 1914. The Kho-Kho Federation of India, which governs the game, was established in 1956. The modern form of the game was developed by Hanuman Vyayam Prasarak Mandal, Amravati.
4. Championships: The first Kho-Kho championship is believed to have been held at Vijayawada in 1959. Kho-Kho was included in the National Games for the first time in 1985, in Delhi.
5. International growth: The first Asian Kho-Kho Championship was held in Calcutta in 1996, with India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka participating.
