1. Establishing scientific and technological foundations for better use of a country's resources encourages international cooperation in the field of science.
2. To correct imbalances in scientific and technological manpower that exist because 90% of trained manpower is concentrated in the industrialised countries.
3. It encourages basic research in the fields of mathematics, physics, geology, hydrology, environment and biotechnology. It promotes awareness and interaction between science and technology. As a result, it finances engineering and technology schemes in a number of developing countries.
4. It also promotes the social sciences as an instrument for the realisation of human rights, justice and peace.

Thus, by promoting education and the spread of science, UNESCO makes a move in the direction of instilling peace in the hearts of people, into their private and public ambitions and daily lives.
