The Speaker of the Lok Sabha is called the Presiding Officer of the Lok Sabha. His or her main functions are:
- The Speaker of the Lok Sabha presides over its meetings, maintains order and discipline, and finalises the agenda in consultation with the House leader.
- The Speaker allocates time for discussions, chooses members to speak, and decides whether a bill qualifies as a money bill.
- In case of a tie, the Speaker casts the deciding vote. They interpret procedural rules, and their rulings are binding. As per the 52nd Constitutional Amendment (1985), the Speaker decides disqualification cases due to defection.
- The Speaker also heads various parliamentary committees, appoints their chairpersons, and serves as the official representative of the Lok Sabha at ceremonial events.
