1. Mango showers are localized pre-monsoon rains that occur mainly in the southwestern Indian states (Kerala and coastal Karnataka) during April - May. They are short, often convective thunderstorms or showers triggered by intense heating of the land, formation of low-pressure areas, and moisture-laden winds from the Arabian Sea; they precede the onset of the southwest monsoon.
2. Farmers call them “mango showers” because the timing coincides with mango flowering and fruit development; the rains improve flowering, hasten ripening, and boost yields; the showers are likewise beneficial for coffee and tea plantations.
3. In different regions these rains are also called blossom showers or cherry blossoms. Although brief, mango showers bring welcome relief from summer heat and influence crop calendars, but excessive or poorly timed showers can damage blooms and reduce fruit set.
4. The phenomenon therefore denotes both a seasonal meteorological event and an agricultural influence and supports many local livelihoods and incomes.
