In cricket, an appeal is the act of a fielding team player requesting an umpire for a decision on whether or not a batsman is out.

An appeal of “How's that” includes all possible modes of dismissal. The umpire at the bowler’s end will respond to appeals first, except for decisions under Laws 35, 38, or 39 that happen at the striker’s end. An umpire cannot give a batter out unless the fielding side appeals, and this must be done before the next ball is delivered.
