उत्तर

Canal irrigation is an artificial way of watering agricultural land that uses a network of man-made channels to divert water from rivers or dams directly to farmlands. This system is divided into two parts: inundation canals, which only receive water when a river floods, and perennial canals, which are fed by permanent barrages to ensure a consistent, year-round supply. This technology is extremely successful in Northern India's flat, soft alluvial plains because the level topography facilitates channel digging and perennial rivers assure consistent water flow. While canals transform huge arid areas into productive crop belts and protect agriculture from irregular monsoons, poor management can result in soil waterlogging and salinity.
