Atavism is the sudden reappearance of an ancestral trait or structure that had disappeared or been greatly reduced in the organism's recent ancestors. It is also known as reversion. Atavistic structures are features that were present in the distant ancestors but are normally absent or reduced in modern individuals of a species, yet occasionally reappear due to genetic or developmental reasons.
