Simplification means removing unnecessary varieties, sizes, and grades of products made by a company. Its main aim is to make better use of resources, reduce stock levels, and increase sales turnover. It also helps in reducing labour and machine costs. For example, a shoe company should produce normal sizes like 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. But if it starts producing too many small variations, such as 0, 0.5, 1, 1.25, 1.5, 1.75, 2, 2.25, 2.5, 2.75, 3, etc., it becomes impractical. Such small differences are unnecessary. Producing too many sizes requires different machines, more inventory, and higher labour costs. Therefore, simplification reduces unnecessary variety and helps lower costs and improve efficiency.
