Many intelligence tests tend to favor the culture in which they were originally created. The sample questions in these tests are often based on the lifestyle and experiences of a specific cultural group. For example, most early intelligence tests were designed using samples from urban, middle-class European and American communities. As a result, the test content reflected only those cultural backgrounds and did not suit others, especially those from Asian or African cultures. The scoring standards, or norms, were also based on these limited cultural groups. These tests are known as culture-biased intelligence tests and are not suitable for evaluating the intelligence of people from different cultural backgrounds. Verbal tests often fall into this category. To solve this issue, culture-free verbal and performance tests have been developed to give fairer results across cultures.
