The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) is a regional organisation founded in 1997. It comprises seven Member States lying in the littoral and adjacent areas of the Bay of Bengal. Among them, five are from South Asia, including Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and two from Southeast Asia, including Myanmar and Thailand. BIMSTEC acts as a bridge between South and Southeast Asia and mainly aims to facilitate rapid economic development and promote collaboration on matters of common interests.
