The characteristics/features of the North Indian Plains are as follows:
- The North Indian Plains, which are largely flat low-lying areas, located between the Himalaya Mountains in the north and the peninsular plateau in the south.
- It also runs from Rajasthan and Punjab in the west to Assam in the east.
- The North Indian Plains are divided into two sub-regions, the Ganga Basin and the Brahmaputra Valley.
- The Ganga Basin to the east of the Aravalis is also known as the Ganga Plains, and it slopes eastward.
- The Ganga-Brahmaputra delta system includes the vast majority of West Bengal and Bangladesh. It is known as the Sunderbans, the world’s largest delta.The
- Thar Desert occupies the western section of the North Indian Plains. It is also known as the Marusthali or Thar Desert.
- To the north of the desert lay the Punjab plains, which were produced by the depositional process of the Sutlej River and its tributaries. It slopes toward the west and extends beyond the Aravalis and Delhi mountains. Agriculture is widely practised in this region since the soil is quite fertile.
