Contention

Explain contention accessing method in brief.

• In contention, any device in the network can transmit at any moment (first come first served).
• This mechanism fails down when two computers attempt to broadcast at the same time. This is a case of the collision.
• Carrier sensing mechanisms are utilized to prevent collisions. Before attempting to transmit, each machine in this scenario listens to the network. If a network is busy, it waits till network quits down.
• In carrier detection, computers continue to listen to the network as they broadcast. It computer detects another signal that interferes with the signal it is sending, it stops transmitting. After waiting the random period of time, both computers try to send.
• On LANs, contention methods are the most often used media access control technique.
