Explain Hershey-Chase experiment. What was proved through this experiment?

Hershey and Chase separately labelled T₂ phage protein with radioactive ³⁵S and DNA with ³²P, then allowed the phages to infect E. coli. After blending and centrifugation, ³⁵S remained in the supernatant with the phage coats, while ³²P was found in the bacterial pellet. Thus DNA, not protein, enters bacteria and carries hereditary information.
