- Social change is a continuous process: Social transformation is a constant. When seen in the context of social change, even the old adage, “Nothing is constant except death and taxes,” can be contested. As life expectancy has increased as a result of advancements in medical sciences, our perspectives on death have evolved. Although change is constant and evident, each civilization may have a different goal and speed for change.
- Social change may be initiated but sometimes it happens spontaneously: Society undergoes changes as a result of the efforts of economists, social reformers, scientists, policymakers, and even writers and journalists. Scientists may create new devices, uncover natural principles (such as the Earth’s orbit around the sun), or test methods that could alter civilization. Social reformers may challenge a long-standing practice (child marriage), establish new social standards (women’s education), or establish new objectives for society that promote and guarantee social change.
- Social Change may have both positive and negative consequences: Social change sparks debate and controversy in all areas of life. Since social change necessitates adaptation, the majority of people view change as an assault on the tranquil rhythm of life and are uncomfortable with adaptation efforts. When a social norm is altered, those who benefited from the previous pattern face difficulties, while others who suffered as a result applaud the change. Since they were adept at operating various animal-drawn carts, cars must have caused the unemployment of a large number of people if they are to represent speed, mobility, and time specificity for everyone.
- Often social change is misinterpreted as change in life style: Lifestyles might change quickly due to fashion shifts, but this shouldn't be mistaken for societal change. Society underwent extensive and long-lasting transformations as a result of the Industrial or Information Revolutions. Computers have both beneficial and harmful consequences; they can create new types of professions while displacing older ones, they can connect people in global electronic networks while isolating them in workplaces, and they can provide massive amounts of information while endangering personal privacy. Many changes in clothing have led to changes in people’s mobility, patterns of male-female contact, etc., but these changes also depend on other circumstances and can be readily given up to other changes. Therefore, this cannot be seen as a social change.
