Basis National Party State/Regional Party
Area of influence A national party has influence and works in several states across the country. A state or regional party mainly has influence and works in one particular state or a few states.
Main issues National parties mainly focus on issues concerning the whole country, such as national security, the economy and foreign policy. State or regional parties mainly focus on local and regional issues, such as state development, language, culture and regional interests.
Recognition A party is recognised as a national party when it fulfils the Election Commission’s required conditions in multiple states. A party is recognised as a state party when it fulfils the Election Commission’s required conditions in a particular state.
Examples: Examples include BJP, Indian National Congress (INC), BSP, CPI(M), AAP and NPP. Examples include DMK, TDP, BJD and Shiv Sena.
