उत्तर
- Whistle signals - start/stop/penalty/goal: The referee uses the whistle to start or stop play, to call fouls, to indicate a goal, and to restart play after stoppages. Players must stop or resume play immediately when they hear the whistle and look to the official for the next instruction.
- Hand signals for fouls and violations: Officials use specific hand gestures to indicate the nature of an infringement (for example, signalling an offensive foul, direction of possession, or the type of violation). Players should acknowledge the call, accept any award (free kick, throw‑in, foul shots, etc.), and reposition according to the signal. In basketball, referees use a clear hand signal (e.g., hand on the back of the head and pointing) to indicate an offensive foul.
- Card signals (disciplinary): In sports that use cards (e.g., field hockey, football/soccer), the official shows coloured cards to discipline players: green/yellow/red for progressively serious misconduct (temporary suspension, caution, send‑off). Players shown a card must leave the field for the appropriate time or leave permanently if sent off.
- Assistant‑referee/flag signals: Assistant referees (linesmen) use flags to indicate which team gets a throw‑in, corner kick or goal‑kick, to flag offside, and to signal substitutions or infringements to the center referee. Players follow the flagged decision (e.g., prepare for a throw‑in or retreat for an offside restart).
- Time/clock signals and stoppage signals: Officials signal the start and end of halves, stoppages for injury, time‑outs, and other clock-related events; they also act when the shot/period clock expires. Players must stop play when time is signalled and follow the restart procedure indicated by the official.
