The caste system is a distinctive way in which Hindus organize their society. It divides people into four groups, with Brahmins and Kshatriyas at the top, followed by Vaishyas and Shudras. The caste system has four primary features, as follows:
- Caste as a hierarchical division of society: The Hindu social system is very hierarchical, with the Brahmins at the top and the Shudras at the bottom. The framework, originally based on the functional traits of people over time, has evolved into a social order in which the higher castes receive all the benefits, while the Shudras can obtain water only from wells outside areas designated for them.
- Restrictions on dietary practices as determined by the caste system: For people in certain castes, there are restrictions on what foods may be consumed. For example, Brahmins are not permitted to eat meat containing onion or garlic. The Shudras, on the other hand, can eat beef, which upper-caste Hindus don't think is right at all.
- Social relations restrictions: Inter-caste marriages are usually forbidden in Hindu society.
- Social segregation of Shudras: Even though India is now an independent country, there are still many places where the Shudra tribes live on their own land. People from these groups aren’t allowed to attend social events organized by upper-caste groups, such as weddings or holidays.
