In basketball, a goal occurs when certain conditions are achieved:
- The ball must travel entirely through the basket from above.
- The shot must be taken within the boundaries of the court.
- If the player taking the shot is jumping, they must release the ball before their feet touch the ground.
- The shot must be taken before the shot clock runs out or within regulation time (including overtime).
- No offensive or defensive basket interference (or goaltending) may occur while the ball is in the basket or the cylinder above the rim.
