  1. Pace bowling: A pace bowler relies mainly on speed, bounce and movement. The bowler runs up and delivers the ball quickly, using changes in length and direction to challenge the batter.
    1. Swing bowling: The bowler uses the ball’s condition and seam position to make it move sideways through the air.
    2. Seam bowling: The bowler lands the seam on the pitch to make the ball deviate after bouncing.
    3. Change of pace: The bowler varies the speed of delivery to deceive the batter.
  2. Spin bowling: A spin bowler imparts rotation to the ball so that it changes direction after pitching. Spin bowling is generally delivered at a slower pace and depends on flight, turn and deception.
    1. Off-spin: The ball turns from the off side towards the leg side for a right-handed batter.
    2. Leg-spin: The ball turns from the leg side towards the off side for a right-handed batter.
    3. Variations: Googly, doosra, top-spinner and flipper are examples of deliveries used to surprise the batter by changing the direction, bounce or flight of the ball.
  3. Underarm and overarm bowling: Underarm bowling was used in the earlier history of cricket. From around 1760, overarm bowling developed and replaced it, becoming the familiar style used in modern cricket.
