The Story of Tricki Woo
Tricki Woo was a small, lovable dog who lived a life of absolute luxury with his owner, Mrs. Pumphrey. Because she loved him so much, she could never say no to his begging eyes and constantly fed him rich meals, cream cakes, chocolates, and even cod-liver oil. Over time, Tricki became dangerously overweight, looking more like a bloated sausage than a dog. He lost all his energy, spent his days panting on a rug, and eventually became so ill that he stopped eating altogether.
When James Herriot, the local veterinarian, finally saw how bad things had become, he knew that the dog didn’t need medicine he needed a drastic lifestyle change. He convinced Mrs. Pumphrey that Tricki had to be hospitalised for two weeks to get his health back on track.
Life at the hospital was a shock for the little dog. For the first two days, he was given plenty of water but no food. He was also let out to run and play with the other dogs in the kennel. At first, Tricki was confused, but soon he joined in the fun. He started running, playing, and even fighting for his share of food at mealtime. The change was remarkable; the once-listless, fat dog transformed into a hard-muscled, active, and energetic animal who was full of life.
When the two weeks were up, Mrs. Pumphrey arrived to pick him up. She was overcome with emotion the moment she saw him. As soon as Tricki spotted her, he leapt into her arms, wagging his tail and licking her face. Mrs. Pumphrey was overjoyed to see her little companion healthy and happy again. As she drove away, she turned to the vet and called it a “triumph of surgery,” but in reality, it was a triumph of discipline and care. The story serves as a gentle reminder that sometimes, true love means knowing when to say no and doing what is best for the long-term well-being of those we care about.
