Meaning	Planning is a psychological process of thinking and deciding in advance what is to be done and how it is to be done.	Directing is the process of instructing, motivating, guiding and leading people to work to the best of their capabilities in order to achieve the predetermined goals and objectives.
Objective	To set goals and choose the means to achieve them.	To get the work done in the right manner.
Level of management	Plans are formulated by the top-level management.	Directions are given by the managers present at every level of any organisation.
Order	First function of management.	Comes after staffing
Factors	Internal and external aspects are considered while setting goals.	Only internal factors are considered in directing
