The 1947-48 war had big effects. Kashmir stayed divided, and this keeps causing tension between India and Pakistan even today. Here are four main consequences:

  1. Division of Kashmir and Line of Control (LoC): The UN ceasefire in 1949 marked the end of the war. About two-thirds of Kashmir was under Indian authority (Jammu, Kashmir Valley, Ladakh), while one-third was under Pakistani control (Azad Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan). Line of Control (LoC) replaced the ceasefire line. Both claim the entirety of Kashmir because there is no complete peace deal.
  2. UN involvement and plebiscite promise: India brought up the matter with the UN, which advised holding a plebiscite (vote) so that people could choose between India and Pakistan if Pakistan withdrew its forces. There was never a plebiscite because Pakistan never completely withdrew. This maintains the conflict on a global scale.
  3. Many future wars and conflicts: Unresolved Kashmir resulted in numerous small-scale clashes along the Line of Control, as well as more wars (1965, 1999 Kargil). Shelling, militant attacks, and cross-border terrorism continue. It puts an end to regular communication, trade, and relations between Pakistan and India.
  4. Military tension and nuclear risk: Both nations have sizable armies along their borders. They developed nuclear weapons as a result of the Kashmir dispute (India in 1974, Pakistan later). Any minor dispute could turn into a major threat. Ceasefires frequently break out, as they have in recent years, indicating that Kashmir is still a hotspot.
