Dominant genes Recessive genes
A dominant gene expresses its effect even in the heterozygous condition. A recessive gene expresses its effect only in the homozygous condition.
It masks the effect of its corresponding recessive gene. Its effect is masked by the dominant gene in the heterozygous condition.
It is represented by a capital letter, e.g., T (Tall). It is represented by a small letter, e.g., t (Dwarf).
Example: Gene for tallness (T) in a pea plant. Example: Gene for dwarfness (t) in a pea plant.
