  Nuclear Family Joint Family
1. A small family unit consisting of a husband, wife, and their unmarried children. A large family unit including multiple generations and extended relatives.
2. Generally small and limited to the immediate members. Generally large, including grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, and their children.
3. Lives in a separate household, independent from the extended family. All members live together in the same household or under a shared arrangement.
4. Decisions are made jointly by husband and wife or independently. Elders, especially the oldest male, usually make important family decisions.
5. Each family manages its own finances and expenses independently. Income is pooled together, and expenses are shared by all members.
6. Less control by elders; more liberal and modern in outlook. Strong influence of traditions and elder authority; more conservative.
7. Women often have more freedom and decision-making power. Women may have limited roles; they are expected to follow family norms and elders’ decisions.
8. Emotional and physical support comes from a smaller circle. Stronger emotional, financial, and caregiving support from a wider network.
