उत्तर
During the Rig Vedic period, society was divided based on occupation and ability, not by birth. This division later developed into the Varna system.
The society was broadly divided into four Varnas:
- Brahmins: Priests and scholars who performed religious rituals.
- Kshatriyas: Warriors and rulers who protected the land.
- Vaishyas: Traders, farmers, and herders engaged in economic activities.
- Shudras: Workers and servants who served the other three Varnas.
In the Rig Vedic age, this system was flexible and based on a person’s work and merit, not heredity. It became rigid and birth-based in the later Vedic period.
