उत्तर

India has world-famous fertile land. The Indus, Ganga, Brahmaputra, and the other rivers deposited the Great North Plain of India. These rivers deltas are more fertile than their valleys. Large areas of rich coastal plains can support a variety of crops.

Many hills, plateaus, and mountains are almost entirely barren and unsuited for agriculture. Hill slopes are used to grow tea and coffee when conditions allow. In some regions, hill slopes have been leveled for rice farming. Shifting cultivation in the North-East has destroyed agricultural land. Canal over-irrigation in Punjab and Haryana has caused soil waterlogging, salinity, and acidity. Black lava soil on the plateau region is fertile and produces a range of crops, especially cotton, without fertilizer. It has not yet drained.
