After accepting a position as a teacher at Greenslade School, the narrator first struggles greatly with his rebellious students. They reject him and make fun of him. But in the end, the narrator wins their hearts with his understanding. Later on, he develops a strong affection for them and wishes them well in life; he is keen to see the extent to which his instruction has been successful. On the crucial day of the Students' Council's half-yearly report, he can evaluate it based on their demeanor, conduct, and attitude. Additionally, he wants to see how they communicate and how much they have learnt in the allotted time. As a result, he feels nervous when his class's time arrives.
