The psychoanalytic approach, developed by Sigmund Freud, focuses on the influence of the unconscious mind in shaping human behavior and personality. Freud proposed that much of our personality is influenced by unconscious desires, past experiences, and unresolved inner conflicts, particularly those from early childhood.

Freud identified three key components of personality:

  • The Id: The primitive part of personality that operates on the pleasure principle, seeking immediate gratification of basic needs and desires, such as hunger or sex.
  • The Ego: The rational part of personality that operates on the reality principle. It balances the desires of the id with the demands of the external world and social constraints.
  • The Superego: The moral part of personality that internalizes societal rules and values, leading to feelings of guilt or pride based on actions.

According to Freud, behavior is often influenced by unconscious motivations, and people may not be aware of the true causes of their actions. Freud also emphasized the importance of childhood experiences in shaping adult personality and introduced defense mechanisms, such as repression and denial, that protect the individual from anxiety by keeping distressing thoughts in the unconscious.
