Pratiloma refers to a type of marriage in traditional Indian society in which a man from a lower varna (caste) marries a woman from a higher varna. Unlike anuloma (where the man is from a higher varna), pratiloma marriages were generally disapproved of in orthodox Hindu society, as they were seen as violating the social hierarchy.
