For many years, King Tarapida of Ujjayini and his chief queen, Vilasavati, suffered the deep sorrow of being childless. After Queen Vilasavati performed rigorous religious vows, severe penance, and worshipped the gods, King Tarapida saw a divine dream wherein the full moon entered the mouth of the queen. Concurrently, the Prime Minister Shukanasa dreamt of a divine Brahmin placing a white lotus in his wife’s lap. Soon after these auspicious omens, Queen Vilasavati became pregnant and gave birth to a highly radiant prince. He was named Chandrapida, because his countenance was as cool, soothing, and brilliant as the crest of the moon.
The Extraordinary Virtues of Chandrapida made him the epitome of an ideal prince and a flawless future ruler. From early childhood, he displayed an unmatched intellect and sharp grasping power, allowing him to master all scriptures, royal arts, and complex military strategies in a remarkably short period at the royal gurukul. Despite being the crown prince of a vast and wealthy empire, Chandrapida possessed absolute humility, deep gravity, and a complete lack of arrogance. He possessed immense self-control over his senses and listened to the profound, cautionary advice of the wise minister Shukanasa with utmost reverence. His sense of duty, profound justice, and deep compassion towards his subjects showcased a rare and balanced blend of unmatched physical valor and moral excellence.

चन्द्रापीड का जन्मवृत्तान्त महाकवि बाणभट्ट की ‘कादम्बरी’ में वर्णित एक दिव्य और मांगलिक घटना है। उज्जयिनी के प्रतापी राजा तारापीड और उनकी पटरानी विलासवती दीर्घकाल तक संतानहीन होने के कारण अत्यंत दुःखी रहते थे। जब रानी विलासवती ने कठिन व्रत, देवताओं की पूजा और कठोर तपस्या की, तब राजा तारापीड ने एक रात दिव्य स्वप्न देखा कि पूर्ण चंद्रमा रानी के मुख में प्रवेश कर रहा है। इसी समय मंत्री शुकनास ने भी स्वप्न में देखा कि एक दिव्य ब्राह्मण उनकी पत्नी की गोद में श्वेत कमल रख रहा है। इन शुभ संकेतों के बाद रानी विलासवती ने एक परम तेजस्वी बालक को जन्म दिया, जिसका नाम ‘चन्द्रापीड’ रखा गया क्योंकि उसका मुखमंडल चंद्रमा के समान शीतल और कांतिमान था।
