उत्तर
Caste and casteism are deeply rooted social issues in India that divide society on the basis of hereditary status and promote discrimination, inequality, and exclusion. While legal and constitutional measures like the abolition of untouchability, reservations, and anti-discrimination laws have been implemented, these problems persist at the ground level due to social attitudes and traditions.
Social movements play a crucial role in challenging and changing these entrenched norms. Movements led by social reformers like Mahatma Phule, B.R. Ambedkar, Periyar, and others have historically raised awareness against caste oppression and demanded social justice, equality, and dignity for the marginalised. These movements have brought about reforms in education, inter-caste marriages, temple entry, and land rights.
In modern times, Dalit movements, human rights campaigns, and civil society efforts continue to challenge caste-based discrimination, demand fair treatment, and promote equal opportunities. Social movements help change mindsets, build public pressure, and inspire legal and political change from below.
