The Mughal rule started in 1526 A.D. Vijayanagar state, founded in 1336, rose to great power under Krishnadeva Raya. Portuguese established their empire in the East with headquarters at Goa. In Tamil Nadu, in Madurai, Nayak's rule began dividing the Pandya kingdom into seventy-two palayams. The arrival of Jesuit Missions and the work of St. Francis Xavier, as a member of the Society of Jesus, led to the conversion of the fishing community to Christianity (Catholicism) in the Thoothukudi region.
