Kisa Gotami slowly came to understand that death is a natural part of life and that no one can escape it. At first, she was deeply upset by her son’s death and thought only about her own pain. She went around asking for medicine to bring him back to life. When she met Buddha, he asked her to bring a handful of mustard seeds from a house where no one had ever died.
As she went from house to house, she realized that every family had lost someone dear. There was not a single home untouched by death. This made her understand that death is common to all and is part of human life. She then accepted the truth that everyone who is born must one day die. This was the lesson Buddha wanted her to learn.
