How was Islam founded?

Islam began in the early 7th century when the Prophet Muhammad (born c. 570 CE in Mecca) reported receiving revelations from the angel Gabriel beginning around 610 CE and began preaching the worship of one God (Allah) and moral reform. His message met opposition in Mecca, so he and his followers migrated to Medina in 622 CE (the Hijra), where an organised Muslim community formed and the revelations continued; those revelations were later collected as the Qur’an. After Muhammad’s death in 632 CE, leadership passed to the early caliphs, and the community and faith spread beyond the Arabian Peninsula.
