How did Islam spread?

Islam began with Prophet Muhammad’s preaching and the formation of the Muslim community after the Hijra to Medina; after his death, the early Caliphs expanded Islamic rule by conquests across the Near East, North Africa and Spain. Later, the Umayyad and Abbasid dynasties consolidated Islamic law, administration and learning (Baghdad), while trade, pilgrimage and Sufi missionaries spread Islam peacefully to West Africa, Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent.
