Act II develops the conspiracy against Caesar and steadily prepares the audience for his assassination. Each scene increases suspense and brings Caesar closer to the Capitol.

In Scene 1, Brutus is unable to sleep because he is disturbed by the conflict between his love for Caesar and his love for Rome. After reading the anonymous letters planted by Cassius, he convinces himself that Caesar must be killed for the ‘general good’ of Rome. The conspirators meet at his house, and Brutus becomes their leader. His refusal to take an oath, include Cicero or kill Antony shows his idealism but also his lack of foresight. Portia’s concern for Brutus reveals the loving and domestic side of his character.

In Scene 2, Calpurnia is frightened by terrible omens and dreams of Caesar’s death. She begs Caesar not to go to the Capitol, and even the priests advise him to remain at home. Caesar finally agrees, but Decius cleverly flatters him and gives Calpurnia’s dream a favourable interpretation. When Caesar hears that the Senate may crown him, his pride and ambition overcome his caution, and he decides to go to the Capitol.

Scene 3 creates further suspense. Artemidorus has discovered the conspiracy and writes a letter warning Caesar about the conspirators. He intends to give it to Caesar on his way to the Senate. This gives the audience hope that Caesar may still be saved.

In Scene 4, Portia is extremely anxious about Brutus and the conspiracy. She sends Lucius to the Senate House and becomes so nervous that she imagines hearing sounds from the Capitol. The appearance of the soothsayer, who also wishes to warn Caesar, further increases the tension.

Thus, Act II is carefully constructed to move the plot towards its climax. Brutus joins and leads the conspiracy, Caesar is persuaded to leave his house, and repeated warnings create suspense. The omens, dreams and supernatural signs suggest approaching disaster, while Caesar continues towards the Capitol and his tragic fate.
