  2. Sulphur dioxide causes chronic injury, necrosis, and chlorosis; it interferes directly with photosynthesis and respiration. Sensitive crops include cotton, wheat, barley, apple, spinach, beets, celery, tobacco, pepper, lettuce, alfalfa, and primrose.
