प्रश्न
Explain the preparation of hydrogen using electrolysis.

उत्तर
High purity of hydrogen (>99.9%) is obtained by the electrolysis of water containing traces of acid or alkali or electrolysis of an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide using a nickel anode and iron cathode. This process is not economical for large-scale production.
- At anode: \[\ce{2OH^- -> H2O + 1/2O2 + 2e^-}\]
- At cathode: \[\ce{2H2O + 2e^- -> 2OH^- + H2}\]
- Overall reaction: \[\ce{H2O -> H2 + 14O2}\]

Rohan heard that instructions were given to the laboratory attendent to store a particular chemical i.e., keep it in the darkroom, add some urea in it, and keep it away from dust. This chemical acts as an oxidising as well as a reducing agent in both acidic and alkaline media. This chemical is important for use in the pollution control treatment of domestic and industrial effluents. Write the name of this compound.
