उत्तर
- Compulsory Contribution: Taxes are mandatory contributions made by individuals to the state based on their income, property ownership, and specific economic activity. Since paying taxes is required, nobody can avoid doing so. The government may take legal action and impose penalties for tax nonpayment.
- Personal Obligation: Taxes can have the feature of placing a personal burden on the taxpayer. The taxpayer is responsible for paying the taxes that he is obligated to pay. He shouldn't try to avoid paying taxes or conceal his income.
- General Benefit: A third feature is that taxes collected from taxpayers may be paid for the general and shared good rather than just their personal gain. The government uses the taxes it collects to fund public welfare initiatives. When a person receives a particular benefit from the government, they do not pay taxes. Therefore, paying property taxes to the municipality does not guarantee that the money would be used to upgrade the road in front of my home. Rather, it serves the general welfare of the community.
- No Quid Pro Quo: One significant aspect of taxes is that the government never promises the taxpayer a quid pro quo, or something in exchange. The taxpayer and the government do not have a direct reciprocal connection. Stated otherwise, the government does not provide a clear, direct, and proportionate benefit to a taxpayer in exchange for paying taxes. I cannot receive an equivalent amount of benefits from the government if I pay one lakh rupees in income tax to it in a given year.
