उत्तर

Before the spread of printing, India had a strong tradition of handwritten manuscripts in languages such as Sanskrit, Arabic, Persian, and various regional languages. These manuscripts had several distinctive features:

  1. Materials Used: They were written on palm leaves or handmade paper, which made them delicate and special.
  2. Illustrations and Design: Many manuscripts were richly decorated with detailed illustrations and fine calligraphy, adding to their artistic value.
  3. Preservation Methods: The pages were either stitched together or kept between wooden covers to protect them.
  4. Limited Usage: Manuscripts were not commonly used in daily life. Although village schools existed in pre-colonial Bengal, students usually learned through dictation rather than by reading texts. As a result, many people became literate without actually reading manuscripts.
  5. Fragility and Cost: Manuscripts were costly and easily damaged, requiring careful handling, which made them unsuitable for regular reading and limited their accessibility.

Even after printing technology was introduced, the production of manuscripts continued for wealthy patrons until the late nineteenth century.
