उत्तर
- Short range order: Amorphous solids lack a repetitive, ordered arrangement of their constituent particles. Nonetheless, there may exist an organised configuration of the structural units; however, this arrangement is not very regular and extends only up to a few Angstroms. This is the reason amorphous substances are described as having short-range order.
- Geometrical configuration: Amorphous solids do not have clear or standard shapes because their particles are arranged randomly.
- Melting points: Amorphous solids lack distinct melting points. They liquefy across a spectrum of temperatures. For instance, when glass is subjected to heat, it initially softens and subsequently melts within a specific temperature range. This feature is highly advantageous in the molding and blowing of glass into diverse forms.
- Action of heat: Under typical conditions, amorphous solids remain amorphous when allowed to rest. However, at certain temperatures, they undergo a crystalline transformation when heated or annealed. The glass objects that are retrieved from ancient civilisations typically appear milky, rather than transparent. This is a result of a crystallisation that has occurred within them.
- Heats of fusion: In contrast to crystalline solids, amorphous solids lack specific and distinctive temperatures of fusion.
- Cleavage: Amorphous solids cannot be sliced along defined planes. They produce an uneven incision when severed with a knife.
- Nature: Amorphous solids do not qualify as genuine solids. They are typically considered supercooled liquids or pseudo-solids.
