उत्तर

Hypergamy is a social norm that stems from caste-based segregation in Hindu society. The rules prohibit women from marrying someone of a lower caste than their own. She can marry someone from a higher caste than her own, known as anuloma marriage. A Brahmin woman can only marry a Brahmin man, while a Kshatriya woman can marry either a Brahmin or a Kshatriya man, but not a man from the Vaishyas or Shudra castes. If she marries a guy from a lower caste (hypogamy/pratiloma marriage), she will lose her caste position and associated rituals. Men can marry a woman from a lower caste than their own. If a Kshatriya man marries a woman from the Vaishya caste, he retains his ceremonial purity and caste standing. However, the children of such a couple will have a lower caste than their father. The law of hypergamy was implemented to protect women from losing their caste status and becoming ritually impure.
