The important methods for the preparation of colloidal solutions (or sols) can be categorized based on the nature of the colloid,lyophilic and lyophobic,as follows:

A. Preparation of lyophilic (Hydrophilic) sols: These colloids have a strong affinity for the dispersion medium and are easily prepared by:

  • Direct dissolution: Dissolving substances like starch, gelatin, or gum arabic in water with gentle warming and then cooling.
  • Organic solvents: For example, cellulose nitrate dissolves in ethyl alcohol to form collodion.

B. Preparation of lyophobic (Hydrophobic) sols: These colloids do not mix with the dispersion medium and require special methods, broadly divided into:

1. Dispersion methods: These methods involve breaking down larger particles into colloidal sizes while using a dispersion medium.

  1. Mechanical dispersion: Using a colloidal mill where coarse particles are ground into colloidal dimensions.
  2. Electrical dispersion (Bredig’s Arc method): An electric arc is struck between metal electrodes (e.g., gold/silver), and the vaporized metal condenses into colloidal particles in cold water.
  3. Peptization: A freshly prepared precipitate is dispersed into colloidal form by adding a suitable electrolyte (called a peptizing agent), e.g., Fe(OH)3 sol with FeCl3.

2. Condensation (Aggregation) methods: These involve joining smaller particles to form colloidal-sized particles via chemical or physical means:

(i) Chemical reactions:

Oxidation: \[\ce{H2S + Br2 -> Colloidal sulphur}\]

Reduction: \[\ce{AuCl3 + SnCl2 -> Colloidal gold}\]

Hydrolysis: \[\ce{FeCl3 + H2O -> Fe(OH)3 sol}\]

Double decomposition: \[\ce{As2O3 + H2S -> As2S3 sol}\]

(ii) Physical methods:

  • Exchange of solvent: A true solution (e.g., sulphur in alcohol) is poured into a miscible solvent (e.g., water) where the solute is insoluble, forming a colloid.
  • Excessive cooling: Freezing a mixture of water and a non-polar solvent like ether can create a colloidal solution of ice.
