We know, sulphate ion has a charge –2

i.e., \[\ce{SO^{2-}_4}\]

Then, [Co(NH3)5Br]2+

The oxidation state of NH3 = 0

The oxidation state of Br = –1

Let the oxidation state of Cobalt ion is x

Then, x + (3 × 0) × 5 + (–1) = +2

⇒ x – 1 = +2

⇒ x = +3

Therefore the oxidation state of cobalt ion is +3.
