- The towns worked as ports and artisanal centres.
- Arikkamedu, Kaveripoompattinam, Azhagankulam and Korkai on the east coast and Pattanam in Kerala were port centres.
- Kanchipuram, Uraiyur, Karur, Madurai and Kodumanal were inland trade centres.
