उत्तर

Credit plays a vital role in the rural economy by supporting agricultural growth, promoting investment, and improving livelihoods. Farmers need credit to purchase essential inputs such as seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, water and equipment. Since there is a gap of several months between sowing and selling crops, credit helps farmers manage their expenses during this period.

When credit is used effectively, it boosts production and income. Institutional credit from banks and cooperatives helps farmers invest in modern techniques, irrigation, and better storage facilities. It also reduces dependence on moneylenders, who often charge high interest rates and exploit borrowers. Additionally, credit supports nonfarm activities like dairy farming and small businesses, creating employment opportunities in rural areas.

However, credit can also lead to a debt trap if crops fail due to poor weather, pests, or high-interest loans. In such cases, farmers may struggle to repay debts and even lose their land. Therefore, access to fair credit, financial support, and risk management systems are crucial to ensuring that credit benefits rural farmers and contributes to economic development.
