  • Apical meristem:
  1. Apical meristem is produced from promeristem and forms growing point of apices of root, shoot and their lateral branches.
  2. It is known as apical initials because it leads to an increase in the length of the plant body.
  3. The shoot apical meristem is terminal in position, whereas the root apical meristem is subterminal, meaning it is located behind the root cap.
  • Intercalary meristem:
  1. The top or base area of the node contains intercalary meristematic tissue.
  2. Their activity is mainly seen in monocots.
  3. These are short-lived.
  • Lateral meristem:
  1. It is present along the sides of central axis of organs
  2. It contributes to the growth of the stem or root's girth. Intrafascicular cambium, for example.
  3. It is found in gymnosperm and dicot angiosperm vascular bundles.
