# What is the Decrease in Weight of a Body of Mass 500 Kg When It is Taken into a Mine of Depth 1000 Km? - HSC Science (Electronics) 12th Board Exam - Physics

ConceptAcceleration Due to Gravity and Its Variation with Altitude and Depth

#### Question

What is the decrease in weight of a body of mass 500 kg when it is taken into a mine of depth 1000 km? (Radius of earth R = 6400 km, g = 9.8 m/s2)

#### Solution

Date : m = 500kg

d = 1000 km

R = 6400 km

g = 9.8 m/s2

Formula :

Wd = m xx gd = "mg" ((R-d))/R

gd = g(R-d)/d

= (9.8(6400 - 1000))/6400

= 9.8 xx 0.843

gd = 8.268 m/s

Wd = m x gd

= 500 x 8.268

Wd = 4134.3 N
