Solution

Carbohydrates are classified as

(a) Reducing sugars:- They reduce Fehling’s solution and Tollens’ reagent. All monosaccharides, whether aldoses or ketoses, are reducing sugars.
Disaccharides in which aldehydic and ketonic groups are free behave as reducing sugars.

Examples: Maltose, lactose

(b) Non-reducing sugars: They do not reduce Fehling’s solution and Tollens’ reagent. Disaccharides in which aldehydic or ketonic groups are bonded behave as nonreducing sugars.

Example: Sucrose
