A transverse wave is produced on a stretched string 0.9 m long and fixed at its ends. Find the speed of the transverse wave, when the string vibrates while emitting second overtone of frequency 324 Hz.

Solution

Given : l=0.9m, n=324 Hz

To Find: Speed(v)

Formulae:  `v=nlambda`

In 2nd overtone, 3 loops are formed.

`l=3/2 lambda`

`lambda=(2l)/3`

From formulae

`v=n(2l)/3=324(2/3xx0.9)`

v=194.4. m/s

The speed of the transverse wave is 194.4 m/s.
